Everyone has those days.

No matter how organised and dynamic an individual you are , there will come a time when you  absolutely fall out of your routine.

For some people that’s a small mis-step or just a way to recharge and go full on again. If you are one of those people, good on you!

For others not so blessed with will power it may take a longer time, a great deal of effort and may even become habitual.

There are many reasons why people lack motivation and different variables will apply depending on factors such as age or situation such as work or school.

Studies have suggested the following as some reasons for lack in motivation in the workplace.

1. Poor Leadership

2. Lacking the right skill set

3. Limited scope for professional development

4. Harassment/ bullying

5. feeling unappreciated

6. Lack of accountability

7. Feeling undervalued

While I have had my fair share of duvet days , I am also one of those people who are really good at giving myself that proverbial kick and get going again.

Here are some tips that have worked for me.

1. Trying small steps

Life does get overwhelming at times. Depending on what you are faced with, trying to tackle it all at once can be daunting. Try breaking it down into manageable bits and work towards smaller short term goals. It may take a longer time but the important thing is, getting there. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day

2. Linking to motivating people

I try to mostly connect with people who are positive and uplifting. If you are a negative Nancy (no offence to any Nancy) chances are I will not be anywhere where you are.

3. Pray

What can I say? Prayer is my go to!

4. Seek out and follow

I will actively seek out people and sources of motivation and follow them! Usually this is just ordinary people who may be doing extraordinary things. Whether it be weight loss or overcoming the odds despite different abilities. Very rarely this will be a public figure or celebrity. A bit of weight on the conscience every now and then is worthwhile!

 5. Music!

I can get out of any slump with the right kind of music! Music has truly helped me overcome some many challenging. When I can’t find the will power to draw on anything else there is always good old Alexa!

Studies have shown that music can have profound impact on our wellbeing, as the brain is able to 'translates' the sounds into experiences that can affect mood or state of mind. Choosing sad or mournful music may serve to worsen your mood while a choice of happy and upbeat music will help to lift your spirits and your mood!

6. Positive reminders

If you are going to surround yourself with ‘things’ make them count. Don’t hold on to things just because… keep positive reminders and inspiring mementos around you. When you are feeling out of sorts these will help you to recall happier times and hopefully help you to re centre.

7. Make a note of your goals

I keep away from resolutions as a rule because I get really frustrated at myself when I can’t stick to them. Keep a vision board with the things/goals you want to achieve within a reasonable time frame. Be realistic.

Put little stars or ribbons on each as you achieve them.

8. Celebrate your successes!

You have worked hard for whatever it is. Celebrate it! It may be just a small treat or whatever you fancy!

9. Exercise!

Stretches and a good run does it for me. Exercise helps to release dopamine and endorphins in your body and brain that is great for relieving stress , anxiety and depression. Exercise is also and great for boosting self-esteem!

10. Hydrate

Water has many benefits for the body. Being hydrated helps with focus and concentration which can go a long way to help lift your mood. 2 - 3 litres per day is recommended.

11. Have something to look forward to.

This little trick is a great motivator to help me get through a difficult or just plain boring day. I plan something that I can be excited about. Then I spend the day looking forward to it. Works a treat!

Conclusion

Its quite easy to fall into slump. When life throws its curved balls you are either built to catch it or you are not. Often, there is something that we can do or someone we can talk to who can help to point us in the right direction. The important thing is to not get to the point where a lack of motivation becomes an habitual situation.

How do you become motivated?
